What I would say is dont open the concave completely as when you do block it it takes alot more work to clean it out If you leave yourself a bit of thrasher space so when you block it up you open the concave to open.

As for the slugging I can only suggest that either your thrasher belt is shagged or if you have a dual speed thrasher that its not in the slow speed.
