Dont know if this will help, but on smaller 6cyl and 4cyl Deutz engines, I have had the steel head rings suck into the combustion area, allowing the piston to hit the ring, pressing onto the head and transferring combustion temperature to the head temp sensor. remove heads, face heads and replace rings. Just check that V8 has these rings. (its been 10 or more years that I worked with these). Good luck!
