Deutz diesels in R series

I am shopping for a combine soon and the early R-50's and 60's are in a price range I would be able to afford. Are the engines good, so-so or run away? The R-50 looks like a six popper and the 60's look like a v-8, are they reliable with fairly long life? I have seen alot in the 3500 hour range, whats typical life out of one?
